I finally played my first gig here in Granada at a great little restaurant and bar called Imagine, after the classic John Lennon song. Several months ago I emailed the owner, Kevin, out of the blue asking if he had any slots open. I figured he was probably booked solid and would tell me he could fit me in sometime in the next few months, during which time I could practice for the show. I was wrong. He responded asking if I could play that very Friday night from night from 8pm – 11pm! I was in no way prepared for something that soon since I had done no serious practice since arriving here in August. I explained this and declined, promising that I would be in touch again in a few weeks, after I’d had time to practice. El Camello Restaurante Granada, Nicaragua

Location: Calle El Caimito, from Parque Central, 2 blocks towards the lake. El Camello is one of our favorite places to grab lunch. It’s a Mediterranean food joint on Calle El Cisne and Calle El Caimito. The food is light fare that won’t slow you down for the rest of the day. I’ve never been a huge fan of falafel balls, and this place hasn’t changed that. I can’t really chime in on whether they are good or bad, although I suspect they are at least on par with the best falafel balls out there. What I can recommend, however, is the chicken shawarma. You can get it either as a sandwich wrapped in a pita or as a plate. I usually get the plate because I prefer to use a knife and fork. I’m sophisticated that way. TripAdvisor.com 2013 Certificate of Excellence Winner Location: Central Park 1 block East | Calle Libertad y Avenida Cervantes, Granada, Nicaragua I can easily recommend The Garden Cafe as a great place to grab a bite to eat. It was the first restaurant we ate at when we moved here and we have had breakfast or lunch there at least once per week ever since. It is our kid’s absolutely favorite place to go in town, liking it even more than TelePizza, primarily because of their dense, jungle-like courtyard and two massive hammocks. I mean, all he ever gets there is a grilled cheese sandwich, so it’s not like he’s really judging the place on it’s culinary merits. Speaking of culinary merits, the food is consistently good. It is lighter fare, so you never walk out of there feeling like a greasy slob.
